My ex-Landlord is funda-Mentalist "Christian" who hated me studying gnosticism satanism / freemasons / illuminati / wikipedia stuff on ancient egypt etc., he was goaded into phoning police after a big ruckus in his place, (He had a rent-cheque stolen from him, not by me) he gave me permission to use WiFi internet (in the tenancy agreement). I’ve very. rarely looked at any porn, anything I did look up was strictly adult… I did send a 2 emails enquiring about online viagra imports (hmmm), nothing on my harddrive is encrypted (no need since I’ve got nothing major illegal to hide). I was VERY into pen-testing with "Backtrack 4" on a USB which I used to capture packets on my local WLAN ( over the course of 48 hours) but did nothing with the Wireshark / airodump pcap files, apart from attempt to analyze weak spots in my firewall and Win XP TCP/IP settings. Any communication online was STRICTLY legal, ie. absolutely no contact with minors or hate-mongers or idiots etc.. I DID have Lots and lots of MP3s / torrents downloaded (ie. Godfather Pt 1-3) but did not burn CDs / DVDs for commercial gain. No fraud or identity hijacking by me, yet lots of .pdf material on hacking techniques and lots of password ripper / cracking software. Cubase SX and Fruityloops and StreamBase installed (from a cracked torrent) Oh, and a CIA ebook on counter-insurgency (v. old from the 1960s). I was also v. interested in serial killers and had viewed lots of crime scene info, but NOTHING of any gruesome or obscene nature was saved or stored on my hard drive and DEFINATELY no way did I even log in or attempt to access anything sick or which would involve minors ( under 18′s) – this is going by the latest CPS guidlines on obscene publications . Am I looking at being convicted as a cyber-criminal? If not (which I should presume) – how long will it take the police to examine everything – including emails? Will they look into anyone else who I have innocently contacted via hotmail / myspace / facebook etc?. Taking into account I v. rarely use MSN or emails to communicate and when I do it is NEVER for purposes other than ordinary social interaction, will there even be much for them to examine? . PC 240Gb harddrive (95% full) and 4Gb USB (with Backtrack 4 persistent install) seized 4 weeks ago today. Techy stuff being my livelihood (I am a freelance software coder / web app designer), will I be able to get any compo or any comeback on the landlord who maliciously accused me? Bear in mind this is traumatic for me, lots of people have turned their backs on me or worse (accusing me of all kinds of sick things and threats against me and my family) and my solicitor says there is nothing that can be done until PC / USB forensic results come back. Will I be able to make any kind of complaint against the malicious rumours, accusations, landlord, police, and the whole incident , (if and when I am found innocent)? I haven’t even been arrested (yet), so does anyone know what kind of timescale I’m looking at before I can get my life back to "normal"? thanks.
